The Graduate Students of Rice University’s History Department is calling for paper proposal for its IV Biennial Graduate Student History Conference

The Crafting of Historical Knowledge: Revealing Narratives through New Methodologies challenges historians to ponder how current methodologies are helping to create and maintain silences and overrepresentation of historical actors, narratives, and artifacts.

We seek papers that propose innovative methodologies that can help move beyond current approaches that have created silences and overrepresentations across the fields of history. While the last few decades have seen historians devoted more attention to the lives of marginalized groups (women, enslaved people, native populations, people of color, LGBTQ communities, and other underrepresented groups), silences and overrepresentations remain within our studies. Imbedded power structures in racism, sexism, and other disparities that have shaped the past have too shaped the histories we write and the archives we curate and consult. Our conference will bring together historians to consider how imbedded power structures within past and present societies have shaped our studies and propose ways to overcome them.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • Archival Structures
  • Colonial/Imperial Power
  • Gender and Sexuality
  • Hypervisibility/Overrepresentation
  • Silences/Censorship
  • Illicit Economies
  • Institutional Inequalities
  • Exploited Communities
  • Fluid Borders
  • Interdisciplinarity
